Friday, August 22, 2008 at 07:18PM Regular readers will know that Adopted Domain is not impressed with the LibDem/SNP administration currently running Edinburgh. I’m honestly astonished how rarely I read something about an Edinburgh council decision that makes me say to myself “that’s a good policy idea”. More often than not, I’m reading stories like the one I recount below.
Green Cllr Burgess proposed a motion to council last week asking for a report on how the council can support local community groups to apply to the Climate Challenge Fund. You can read it below. It’s not particularly controversial. The Labour party, The Greens and The Tories all supported it. Despite this, or most probably, because of this cross party support, the LibDem and SNP coalition felt the need to oppose it, relying on the Provosts casting vote to slap it down.
Rejected, despite the fact that the Greens and the SNP established the Climate Challenge Fund at Holyrood. Rejected, despite Lib Dem leader Nick Cleggs call for policies that would see the UK become a renewable energy exporter by 2050.
When the City of Edinburgh Council is cutting funds to voluntary groups all over the city, you would have thought that they’d be keen to support community groups to access the £18.8 million quid that’s available to them through this fund.
Two Doctors highlights some other examples of LibDem hypocrisy on Green Issues here, if you like that sort of thing. Thanks to Cllr Burns for providing a brief summary of the full council meetings on his blog. If only more councillors could blog as well as he does.
Motion By Councillor Burgess - Climate Challenge Fund
That this Council:
• Welcomes the introduction of the ‘Climate Challenge Fund’ an initiative by the Scottish Green Party and the Scottish Government.
• Recognises that the Fund makes available £18.8m over three years in grant funding to community groups for projects to reduce pollution contributing to climate change.
• Congratulates ‘Going Carbon Neutral Stirling’ for its recent award of £750,000 under the scheme.
• Notes that information about the scheme is available at http://www.climatechaIlenge fund.org.
• Calls for a report on how the Council can encourage and facilitate the city’s community groups to apply for funding under the scheme.”
