Squarespace vs Wordpress

So, having played around with Wordpress for a bit, I'm back on Squarespace. And it feels good. Real good. It just works. And it just works in all browsers. I don't have to mess around with any coding I don't understand. But I can tweak the bits I do at my leisure.

I can think of very little that Squarespace stops me from doing that I want to do. But man, I can think of lots of things that Wordpress stopped me from doing, or took longer to sort out, than in Squarespace. Stuff like:

  • Handling images in posts (never found a plug-in that would make it as slick as Squarespace).
  • Easily changing templates without having to check compatibility with site structure, widgets and extensions.
  • It was a pain having to flick between back end and front end on the server to do stuff.
  • Embedding third party code is a pain in the ass in Wordpress. Mostly not in Squarespace.

Yes, you have to pay for Squarespace, but then you have to pay for hosting for Wordpress (you need to host it yourself for any flexibility) anyway, and so when you take that in to account the price differential is minimal.

I've seen the user interface of Squarespace knocked in some quarters, and I'll admit it isn't as easy as Blogger. But then you can do much more with Squarespace, so it's worth learning. For me, it's still the best platform for no hastle publishing on the web, and this'll be the fourth site I've built with it.

Now I've just got to get Adept Hosting to point my domain name here. Seriously unimpressed with their customer service.
